CHATTOGRAM: Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) is launching this week a 25-day crash programme for eradicating mosquito and reducing water logging in the country’s prime port city, reports BSS. The Conservancy Department of the city corporation will begin this Taka 9- crore programme on Tuesday, which will continue till May 5, Chief Conservancy Officer of CCC Shafiqul Mannan Siddiqui said.
He said 500 conservancy workers, including 266 temporary ones, will be engaged in fighting against mosquito and reducing water logging in all 41 wards of the port city.
The official said the drive will be conducted in five wards everyday till it covers the entire corporation area by May 5 to free the city dwellers from the sufferings of mosquito and water logging.
“The workers will spray mosquito killing insecticide in canals, drains, culverts and other water bodies, which are the major sources of mosquito breeding,” he said.
CCC Executive Engineer Sudip Basak said besides spraying for mosquito control, CCC will also remove mud and garbage from canals, drains, culverts, ponds and water bodies to reduce water logging.
“We want to clean up all drains, culverts and canals in the city so rain water cannot submerge city roads during heavy downpour or low tide", CCC Mayor AJM Nasiruddin told BSS.
He said similar special programmes will be carried out in the city to improve the CCC services and livability of the port city, which is also the country's prime hub for foreign trade.
