Zahir Raihan’s ‘Somoyer Proyojone’ on stage today

Theatre Art Unit will stage its much-acclaimed production titled ‘Somoyer Proyojone’, dramatised and directed by Mohammad Bari based on a short story by Zahir Raihan, today evening at the National Theatre Hall of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital.

‘Somoyer Proyojone’ is a short story written by Zahir Raihan in the year 1971. The story vividly portrays the experiences and the emotional journey of a freedom fighter in the ongoing war. The story has been narrated in a more or less linear structure. Zahir Raihan is basically a filmmaker. He is much acclaimed as an author, but is a much greater film maker. Most of his literary work appears to be seen, depicted and described through the camera frame.

Director Bari wrote a note about the play, “This play is not based on a single story, but a series of events or episodes. The story as far as it exists has been created by the reality of events. Although the characters are fictional, the events described are factual and documented truths. This is why I consciously wanted to maintain a documentary feel in the play.”

Just as Zahir Raihan is physically present in the story and gives a first person narration, he does the same in the play. The original words of the author have been used for the dialogues of Zahir Raihan in the script and that of the freedom fighter Mamun.

In the play, Mohammad Bari will appear as Zahir Raihan. The other important casts of the play includes Prashanta Halder, Selim Mahbub, Saif Suman, Ferdous Amin Biplob and others.

Choreographed by Aniket Pal Babu, Kamaluddin Kabir designed the set while Selim Mahbub directed music and Nasirul Hoque Khokon has done the light design.
