41 BNP-Jamaat men sent to jail

Netrakona: A court here on Sunday sent 41 BNP-Jamaat activists to jail in two cases filed for violence in Madan upazila over the jailing of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on February 8.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate passed the order when they surrendered before the court with a bail prayer.

The two cases—one under the Speedy Trial Act and the other under the Explosive Substances Act—were filed with Madan Police Station accusing 48 named and 20/25 unnamed activists of BNP and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami for unleashing subversive activities centring the verdict of the BNP chief.

The accused include upazila BNP president Nurul Alam, general secretary Mojibur Rahman Chowdhury, vice-presidents Abdul Halim Bulo and Mirza Ramjan Ali, organising secretary Lalu Miah, Madan municipality BNP president Saidur Rahman Samrat, general secretary Bulbul Ahmed and Jamaat upazila vice-chairman Ruhul Amin.

‘Smuggler’ arrested with gold  

Satkhira: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive arrested a suspected gold smuggler along with 128 grams of gold from Boikari border in Sadar upazila on Sunday night, reports UNB.

On a secret information, a BGB team arrested Hafizur Rahman around 8:30pm and recovered the gold searching his body, said Md Mostafizur Rahman, commanding officer of BGB Battalion-33.

Worker dies falling off building

Munshiganj: A construction worker died as he fell from an under-construction building in Sreenagar upazila headquarters on Sunday evening, reports UNB.

Officer-in-charge of Sreenagar Police Station Alamgir Hossain said Mintu Sheikh, 26, son of Shahid Sheikh of Nagerhat village in the upazila, fell down from the 2nd floor of the under-construction building near the upazila parishad complex while lifting cement for construction work, leaving him injured. He was taken to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

‘Arms trader’ held in Satkhira

Satkhira: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) have arrested an alleged arms trader along with a foreign pistol and 12 bullets from Lautara village in Ashashuni upazila, reports UNB.

A Rab team conducted a drive at the village on Sunday evening and arrested Kuddus Fakir, 50, son of Elahi Fakir of the village under Khajra union, said Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Ashashuni Police Station.

The OC claimed that Kuddus had long been involved in arms trading and terrorism activities.

Over 13,000 youths becomes self-reliant in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI: Over 13,000 youths (both male and female) of the district became self-reliant receiving training and loan from BSCIC Skill Development center since the programme began in the district, reports BSS.

Assistant General Manager of BSCIC Industries Service center Mohammad Shazzad hossain told BSS that the BSCIC skill development center during the last 40 years imparted institutional training to 13,510 youth (both male and female) on different trades in the district.

The training course includes fitting cum machine shop practices and welding, electrical house wiring and motor welding, repairing of electrical goods, cutting and Sewing training course, block-batik, refrigeration and air condition repairing, mobile phone repairing and computer course.

The Assistant General Manager said BSCIC also provided easy term loan among the trained youths (revolving fund).

He said over 10,000 youths (both male and female) in the six upazilas of the district are now self-reliant by taking different projects and servicing in the home and abroad by the massive role of the Skill development Center of BSCIC.

554 sewing machines distributed

JAMALPUR: Local Government Division under its human resource development programme distributed 554 sewing machines to poor women in the district during this fiscal (2017-2018), reports BSS.

According to Jamalpur Local Government office sources the LGSP (Local Government Support programme-3) project is working for the development of the poor women. They were distributed 554 sewing machines to poor women here.

The official said some 342 sewing machines were distributed in Melandaha upazila , 90 in Jamalpur sadar upazila, 83 in Islampur, 12 in Sarishabari, 19 in Dewanganj and 8 in Madarganj upazilas of the district.

Deputy Director, Local Government Division, Khandakar Mohammad Abdullah Al Mahmud said the aim of the programme is to raise income of the poor women.
