Man gets life for killing wife

SATKHIRA: A court here yesterday sentenced a man to capital punishment for killing his wife in 2009 in Shyamnagar upazila of the district, reports BSS.

Judge of Women and Children Prevention Court Hosna Ara Akhter handed down the verdict to Kamrul Dhali, 28, a resident at Mirgang village of the upazila.

Three people were acquitted as the prosecution failed to prove their guilt. According to the prosecution, Salma Khatun was beaten to death by her husband Kamrul Dhali for dowry at Miragang village on July 24 , 2009. Following the murder, Salma’s brother Rashedul Mollah filed a case accusing four people on September 2 in the same year.

Woman killed in abandoned mortar shell blast

Tangail: A woman was killed and three others injured as an abandoned mortar shell exploded in Maidherchala area of Ghatail upazila on Wednesday noon, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Moyna Khatun, 25, daughter of late Yakub Ali of the area under Digarh union.

Mohammad Moinuddin, officer-in-charge of Ghatail Police Station, said Moyna collected several abandoned mortar shells from a firing range in Ghatail Cantonment around 12pm and brought them to home. Among those there was an unexploded shell which later exploded while she was throwing those on the ground. She died on the spot, police said.

The injured, Joyen Uddin, 60, Abdur Rajjak, 52, of Elenga village in Kalihati upazila and Mohammad Sharif, 40, were admitted to Combined Military Hospital in Ghatail.

3 held with 7,000 yaba tablets

Cox’s Bazar: Police in separate drives arrested three people along with 7,000 pieces of Yaba tablets worth of Tk 21 lakh in Chakaria upazila on Wednesday night, reports UNB.

Tipped off, a team of Malumghat highway police intercepted a bus of ‘Hanif Paribahan’ and arrested Nurussafa, 21, of Sadar upazila and Ayeas, 22, of Ramu uapzila along with 4,000 pieces of contraband tablets in the night, said Alamgir Hossain, in-charge of highway Police.

In another drive, the same team waylaid a bus of ‘Purbani’ and arrested Mongsai Aung, 26, of Ukhia upazila along with 3,000 pieces of Yaba pills.Two separate cases were filed with Chakaria Police Station.

Youth held over ‘question leak’

Rapid Action Battalion in a drive arrested a ‘cheat’ in Sarishabari upazila in the district yesterday morning for his alleged involvement in JSC, SSC question leak.

The arrested was identified as Humayun, 19, from village Char krishnapur Sarishabari upazila of the district. According to Jamalpur RAB-14, acting on a tip-off a team of the elite force led by Company Commander Rajib Kumar Dev raided Char Krishanapur area at around 5 am and arrested Humayun.

RAB said Humayun along with his allies realized money from students for publishing questions of JSC and SSC examinations in social media for a long time. RAB seized 3 mobile sets and 5 SIM cards from his possession. The syndicate also cheated students of the ongoing HSC examination, RAB added.

A case was registered with Sarishabari police station in this connection.

Road accident kills teacher

A school teacher was killed as a motorbike hit him while crossing the road at Rajganj Bazar in Manirampur upazila on Wednesday night.

The deceased Saju Khan, 40 was a teacher of Gupikantapur High School and son of Iman Ali Kha of Mobarakpur vilalge in the upazila. The accident took place in the area when a motorbike knocked down him while crossing the road around 11 pm leaving him critically injured, said Mobarak Hossain, officer-in-charge of Monirampur Police Station.

Later, he was taken to Jessore General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
