The government will purchase corrugated iron sheets and 7,448 pieces of tent at a cost of Tk. 100 crore as relief materials to be distributed among affected people during natural disaster.

The 3,019 metric tonnes of corrugated iron sheets cost Tk. 42 crore and 7,448 pieces of tent Tk. 60.51 crore. These would be bought by floating open tender.

The Cabinet Committee on Purchase yesterday (Wednesday) at a meeting approved two proposals by the disaster management ministry in this regard. The meeting was held at the Cabinet Division, with finance minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith in the chair.

Disaster management ministry officials said they are purchasing the materials to ramp up relief stocks and supply them immediately during any crisis. The officials said they should be prepared for the rainy season.

“Major cyclones and storm surges occur in different parts of the country during the rainy season and a large number of people are affected by natural calamities every year,” said one of the officials. Some areas of the country, especially Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet, are quake-prone, they added.
