Roof collapse kills 3 workers

Three construction workers were killed and six others injured following collapse of an under-construction roof at Kholapara Khanpukur village in Panchagarh Sadar upazila.

The deceased were identified as Mawla Liton, 35, son of Akkas Ali of Purba Jalasir area, Babu Ali, 25, son of Yusuf Ali, a resident of Chanpara area and Saju, 35, son of Abdul Baten of Darjipara area.

According to police sources, the roof of the under-construction building of ‘Panchagarh Filing Station’ collapsed around 1:30pm, leaving two workers dead on the spot and four others injured.

The injured were admitted at Rangpur Medical College Hospital and Panchagarh Adhunik Sadar Hospital.

Among the injured, one died on the way to hospital. Several workers also remained missing after the incident.

Deputy Commissioner of Panchagarh Md Jahirul Islam and Police Super Giasuddin Ahmed along with high officials visited the spot this afternoon and enquired about the incident and rescue operations.

Rape attempt

Court orders judicial enquiry against Akkelpur OC

Joypurhat: A court here on Tuesday ordered a judicial enquiry against the officer-in-charge (OC) of Akkelpur Police Station over an attempted rape case filed against him, reports UNB.

District Children and Women Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Begum Parveen Momtaz passed the order taking cognisance of the complaint, said Public Prosecutor Advocate Nripendranath Mondal. The court also fixed April 25 for placing the report before it, he added.

According to the case statement, the housewife of Akkelpur municipality filed the case with the court accusing OC Sirajul Islam of attempting to violate her at his office around 10am on Monday when she went there to know the update of a case filed against her earlier.

Road crash kills student

A boy was killed in a road accident at Boilor on Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Trishal upazila of Mymensingh yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mohadev Pal, 8, a class III student at Boilor Govt Primary School. He was son of Jagadish Pal of Boilor. Mohadev sustained critical injuries when a human hauler crashed him while crossing the road around 9am, said Fayezur Rahman, officer-in-charge (Investigation) of Trishal Police Station. Local rushed the victim to Trishal Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.

Protesting the incident, agitated locals put a barricade on the highway for an hour. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

Police seized the vehicle but its driver managed to flee.

Arms trader held in C’nawabganj

Chapainawabganj: Police in a drive arrested an arms trader with four one-shutter guns from a litchi orchard near Shyampur Nari Kalyan School in Shibganj upazila on Tuesday evening, reports UNB.

The arrestee was identified as Raju, 24, son of Mahidur Rahman, a resident of the Bablabona village of the upazila.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of police conducted a drive in the area and arrested Raju red-handed while he was selling four one-shutter guns in the evening around 6:30pm, said Sub Inspector Kamruzzaman of Shibganj Police Station.

5,000 yaba tablets seized

Chapainawabganj: Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) held an alleged drug trader along with 5,000 pieces of yaba tablets from Gopinathpur area in the Sadar district on Tuesday evening, reports UNB.

The detainee was identified as Belal Hossain, 52, son of late Habibur Rahman of the village. On information, members of elite forces conducted a drive at a river in the area around 6pm and held him alongwith the contraband tablets, said Mohammad Sayeed Abdullah Al Murad, Camp Commander of Chapainawabganj RAB-5.
