10 organisations fined for not using Bangla in signboards

A mobile court run by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Thursday fined ten organisations of Gulshan area with Tk 10,000 each for not using Bangla on their signboards, reports UNB.

The mobile court led by DNCC’s Executive Magistrate Md Sajid Anwar carried out the drive to ensure Bangla on signboards, said DNCC Public Relation Officer (PRO) ASM Mamun.

The DNCC conducted the mobile court following a High Court Order (Writ Petition no 1696/2014) that said Bangla is mandatory in writing nameplate, signboards, billboards, banners etc of all organisations (excluding embassies, foreign organisations and related offices).

Local government bodies were given the responsibility to ensure Bangla on all sign boards, he said.

Earlier on January 28, the DNCC published public notices on two daily newspapers giving business establishments a seven-day ultimatum to use Bangla instead of English on all sign boards, nameplates, billboards and banners etc.
