Nakshi Kanthar Math Staged

It was part of the 19th anniversary celebration of Maavoi Abritti Samsad, the only recitation related organisation of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet.

Performers of Maavoi recently staged a lyrical drama (srutinatok), `Nakshi Kanthar Math`, which was directed by Kasib Munna, while Payel Chowdhury was the assistant director. Kapil Bhattacharya, ex-president of Maavoi, composed the drama based on the poem by Pallikabi Jasim Uddin. The stage of the auditorium was decorated with green leaves and scarecrows to resemble village nature. The attires of the reciters were also distinct from any other drama.

The story of Nakshi Kanthar Math (The Field of Embroidered Quilt) centers round the couple, Rupai and Saju. Rupai, a young farmer, falls in love with Saju, a girl in his neighbouring village. They are married. Suddenly, after a quarrel with some villagers, Rupai leaves home. Saju becomes alone and waits every day for her husband and begins to make a nakshi kantha (embroidered quilt), where she stitches all the incidents and tragedies of her life. Days pass, but Rupai does not return. Finally, Saju dies and before her death, she requests her mother to put the quilt on her grave.

In the second part of the programme, invited artistes Mokaddes Babul, Masakur A Sattar, Kazi Mahtab and Monir Hossain of Bangladesh Abritty Somonnoy Parishad), and Liton Chowdhury of Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, Sylhet, recited many types of poems.

Ilyas Uddin Biswas, treasurer of SUST, Faruqe Uddin, professor of sociology department, Jahir Uddin Ahmed, proctor of SUST, and Sarkar Sohel Rana, assistant professor of Bangla department, were presented at the function. Finally, Shuvo Roy, president of Maavoi Abritti Samsad, thanked the performers and guests for making the event successful.
