15 hurt in BCL infighting
Comilla: At least 15 activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) Comilla University unit were injured, among them two bullet-hit, in a clash between two factions of the unit over establishing supremacy on the campus on Friday night, reports UNB..
Campus sources said Nazmul Hossain Alif, president of the university unit BCL, and its secretary Reza-e-Elahi had long been at loggerheads over establishing supremacy on the campus.
As a sequel to the enmity, supporters of Alif attacked supporters of Reza while taking tea around 10pm, triggering a clash in front of Bangabandhu Hall of the university.
Later, both groups exchanged fire, leaving two people injured with bullets.
Besides, 13 other BCL men were also injured during a chase and counter-chase among them.
Bullet-injured Azad, a supporter of Alif group, and Mezbah of Reza group were rushed to a local hospital from where Azad was shifted to Comilla Medical College Hospital.
Bridge opened in remote area

Longed for 44 years the people of Kakua Char in Tangail Sadar upazila saw their ‘dream bridge’ on the river Dhaleswari opening for traffic on Friday.
The newly built bridge is 95 metres long and five metres wide.
Alhaj Sanower Hossain MP formally inaugurated the bridge. Among others, chairman of Tangail upazila parisad Md Khorshed Alam, vice-chairman Laila Akhter Lipi, Executive engineer of LGED Md Mizanur Rahman, Upazila engineer MA Mannan, AL leaders Tofazzol Hossain, Abdus Satter Azad, chairman of Kakua UP Bodiuzzaman Farook were present on the occasion.
Upazila engineer said the bridge was constructed at a cost of Tk 2.70 crores. UP Chairman said the era of ferrying by boat came to an end with the inauguration of the bridge. The sufferings of the deprived char/shoal people are now over.
Upazila chairman said more than 100 BNP activists, led by president of Kakua Union Krisak Dal Md Sofiz Uddin, joined AL by offering bouquet to Alhaj Sanower Hossain MP at the bridge inaugural function.
Two students drown

Two students drowned in separate incidents in Thakurgaon and Chapainawabganj yesterday.
In Thakurgaon, Mrinal Kanti, 17, a college student of Ghidob village in Pirganj upazila of the district, drowned in the river Tangon yesterday noon when he along with his friends went there to take bath.
Mrinal, son of Ikru Chandra of Ghidob village, was a student of class- XI at Pirganj DN Technical College.
The locals and witnesses said Mrinal and his other two friends went to the river for taking bath, but a strong current swept away Mrinal. There has been no trace of Mrinal and believed to have drowned.
In Chapainawabganj, a student of class-V drowned in the river Mohananda at Rehaichar area yesterday morning.
The deceased was Sajid Hasan Leon, 11, son of
Shamim Ali of Chaitanyapur in Shibganj upazila of the district.
Deputy director of Fire Service Department Wahidul Islam and local sources said Leon, a student of Model Government Primary School in the town, went to the river Mohananda to take bath in Rehaichar area, where downed at around 10 am. A team of Fire Service Department from Rajshahi rushed to the spot and after a search it found Leon unconscious at around 12-45 pm. He was rushed to the Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital, but the duty doctor there declared him dead.
Fire guts shops, houses
RANGAMATI: Eight shops and three houses were gutted in a fire at Chaumohoni under Baghaichori upazila of the district last night, reports BSS.
Baghaichori upazila executive officer Md Abdul Alim said the fire originated from an electric short circuit of a shop and engulfed the adjacent area.
Being informed, BGB, Ansar, police extinguished the fire after one hour of frantic efforts with the help of locals.
