Tk 70 lakh seized
SATKHIRA: Members of Border Guard Bangladesh recovered diamond jewelry worth about Tk 70 lakh along Laxmidari border in Sadar upazila recently, reports UNB.
Lt Col Sarder Md Mostafizur Rahman, commanding officer of battalion -38 of BGB, briefed reproters over the recovery at a press briefing held at its headquarters around 9:00am yesterday.
He said BGB members recovered 97 pieces of diamond finger rings, 20 pieces of pendants and 50 pieces of nose pins from sub pillar 2/3 of the main pillar no 3 along Laxmidari border on February 5. The big consignment of diamond ornaments was smuggled into the country from India and sensing presence of BGB members smugglers fled abandoning the jewelry, Mostafizur said.
Child burnt alive in Jamalpur

A child was burnt alive and another injured in a fire at Bakshigan upazila in the district early yesterday.
The victim was identified as Asif Miah, 5, son of Hamidul Islam of Kushalnagar village in Bakshiganj upazila.
Local people said a fire broke out in a kitchen of villager Hamidul Islam at around 12am and engulfed the house. Asif, who was sleeping, was trapped in a room and sustained burn injuries. Amir Hamja, 9, elder son of Hamidul Islam, also suatained burn injuries and was admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Local people doused the flame after an hour of frantic efforts.
Worker dies in Sylhet stone quarry
Sylhet: A worker was killed while he was extracting stones from a quarry at Shah Arifin Tila in Companyganj upazila yesterday, reports UNB.
The deceased was identified as Basir Miah, 42, son of Rupa Miah, resident of Putamara village. Dilwip Kumar Debnath, officer-in-charge of Companyganj Police Station, said the accident occurred when a portion of mud collapsed on Basir, leaving him dead on the spot.
400 families get electricity
PANCHAGARH: Some 400 families of Burirban area under Boda upazila of the district were brought under electrification network by Panchagarh Palli Bidyut Samity yesterday, reports BSS.
Advocate Nurul Islam Sujon formally inaugurated the programme as the chief guest at a simple function held on the premises of Maoydandigi Union Parishad.
Sujon said the government is working relentlessly to provide electricity connection in all houses over the country as electricity illuminated every sphere of human activity.
Around 80 percent rural houses got power connection under the regime of present government, he added.
Polli Bidyut Executive Engineer of Panchagarh Ahasanul Hoque Kabir was present as special guest with Maoydandigi UP chairman Abdul Zabbar in the chair.
Fire station foundation stone laid
PANCHAGARH: The foundation stone of Debiganj Fire Service Station, to be built by Public Works Department at a cost of Tk two crore and 45 lakh, was laid on Saturday, reports BSS.
Local lawmaker Advocate Nurul Islam Sujon formally laid the foundation stone of the fire station at a function as the chief guest. Addressing the occasion, the parliament member said the present government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is relentlessly working for welfare of the people.
He said the continuation of Sheikh Hasina government is needed for uninterrupted development of the country.
Nurul Islam sought vote of the ruling Bangladesh Awami League in the upcoming national elections for the sake development. The function was addressed, among others, by Debiganj upazila parishad chairman Hasnat Zaman Chowdhury and assistant director of the fire service and civil defence Aminur Rahman. Mirja Sakhawat Hossein, executive engineer of the Public Works Department, presided over the function.
AGM of Diabetic Association held
NARSINGDI: The 23rd annual general meeting of Narsingdi Diabetic Association (NDA) was held at Zonal Co-operative training institute in the town on Saturday, reports BSS.
State Minister for water resources Lt Col (Retd) Muhammad Nazrul Islam, (Bir Protik), attended the function as the chief guest with Deputy Commissioner and President of NDA Dr Shubash Chandra Biswas in the chair.
Narsingdi Police Super and Vice president of the Diabetic Association Amena Begum BPM attended the meeting as the special guest while Vice President of the Association Abdul Moman Sarker delivered the welcome speech.
The state minister in his speeches said Bangladesh already achieved laudable success in health sector. Udakhali Mahila College
building inaugurated
GAIBANDHA: A 4-storied academic building of Udakhali Mahila College in Fulchhari upazila of the district was inaugurated on Saturday afternoon amid much enthusiasm among the students, the teachers and the guardians, reports BSS.
Education Engineering Department (EED) implemented the construction of the building at a cost of TK 2.20 crore, EED officials said. Jatiya Sangshad deputy speaker and local lawmaker Advocate Fazle Rabbi Miah formally inaugurated the building through unveiling a plaque and offering munajat at a function as the chief guest.
He said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly for overall development including infrastructure in education sector to build an enlightened nation.
Terming the present government as education friendly, the deputy speaker said initiatives had been taken to ensure quality teaching through multimedia class rooms to the students so that they could acquire knowledge and face the challenges of 21st century.
