6 burnt in transformer blast
Six students of a madrasa sustained burn injuries as a transformer blasted in old Dhaka's Bangshal area on Saturday morning.
The injured were identified as Saber, Sajjad, Ashik, Soleman, Mostakin and Abdur Rahman, all aged between 7-8 years. They are students of Mohammadia Islamia Hafezia Madrasa.
Dhaka Medical College and Hospital sources said a fire broke out when the transformer exploded near the two-stoery madrasa building around 8:30am, leaving them injured. The victims were taken to the burn unit of DMCH, said Bachchu Miah, in charge DMCH police outpost.
City high-rise catches fire
A fire broke out at a 20-storey building in Purana Paltan area of the capital on Saturday morning.
The fire broke out on the second floor of the high-rise, adjacent to Shawon Tower, in the area around 9:10am, said Mahfuz, duty officer at the fire service control room.
Informed, five firefighting units from the headquarters and Khilgaon Fire Station rushed to the spot and are trying to douse the flame. It was not clear what caused the fire.
2376 cases lodged for traffic rule violation
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) in a daylong drive on Friday lodged 2376 cases and realized Taka 7.76 lakh on charges of violation of traffic rules.
It also dumped 48 vehicles and put wrecker in 158 others, said an official release.
Traffic department of police lodged the cases and realized the money from owners and drivers of different vehicles after conducting raids at different thana area in the capital city. The cases were lodged on charges of using hydraulic horn, hooter, beckon light, and tinted glasses.
‘Amar Ekushey’ programme
The district administration has taken up programmes to observe the up-coming Amar Ekushey and International Mother Language Day with due respect and solemnity on February 21.
The day long programmes were chalked out in a meeting held at the conference hall of the deputy commissioner recently with deputy commissioner Rabbi Mia in the chair.
Officials of the district, upazila and union parishad administrations, heads of different government department, educational institutions, freedom fighters, businessmen of Narayanganj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, councilors of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), members of civil society, political leaders and media men attended the meeting. The programme will begin after one minute past 12 midnight on February 21 through placing wreaths at Chasara Shaheed Minar to pay homage to the language movement martyrs.
‘Basanta Mela’ kicks off today
A five-day Basanta Mela and handicraft exhibition will kick off in capital’s Matijheel commercial area on Sunday.
Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC)'s Design Centre will arrange the fair at BSCIC Bhaban in Motijheel. The opening ceremony will be held at Joynal Abedin Exhibition Hall at BSCIC Design Centre around 11:30am, said a press release.
Handicrafts items will be displayed in 60 stalls at the fair. Besides, people who received training from the BSCIC Design Centre will get the chance to showcase their products at the fair. The fair will remain open to all from 10:00am to 5:00pm everyday.
UGC officers’ assoc gets new executives
Dr Md Khaled and Md Mohibul Ahsan have been elected president and general secretary respectively of University Grant's Commission (UGC) Officers' Association for two years.
Other office bearers of the 11-member executive committee are Md Omar Faruque and Engineer Mohammad Monir Ullah as vice-presidents, Golam Dostogir as joint secretary, Rabiul Islam as sports and cultural secretary, Md Morshed Ahammed as treasurer, Md Harun Mia as organising and publicity secretary and Mohammad Nur Islam Chowdhury, Mamun Patwary, AKM Mahmudur Rahman Miah as members.
