The city life in Sylhet has almost come to a halt for the last one week due to heavy rainfall. The incessant rainfall has caused water logging, traffic jam and also crises of transport. A large part of the city, especially the low lying areas, went under knee-deep water. Several areas in the city, including Subidbazar, Dariyapara, Mirgajagal, Jothorpur, Mirabazar, Chorarpar, Niyorpul, Sonapara, Machimpur, Therorothon and Karpara areas have remained under water during the rain hours, causing immense suffering to the city dwellers. The continuous downpour forced the people to remain stranded in their houses.
Many of them could not come out of their houses, businesses suffered setback, office employees and students faced acute transport problem.
They had to wade through stinking water or travel by paying high fares.
Majed Ahmed, a media artist of Shagordigipar area, told the Independent, “Due to incessant rain, we can’t do
our work.” “Eid-ul-Azha has already started knocking at the door, but yet we cannot finish our movie for airing on TV,” he added.
Like Majed many city people suffered a lot for heavy downpour. Met office sources said this situation will continue for a week. Meanwhile, due to incessant downpour, other upazilas of Sylhet have been inundated by flash flood.
Nearly 100 houses of 10 unions have been inundated by rainwater.
Road communication has got snapped in 20 villages following collapse of a culvert on Vatrai Road in Companigonj upazila. Paddy and vegetable fields were also submerged by floodwater in the upazila.
In Goainghat upazila, Goainghat-Salutikor Road has collapsed due to flood water. About 1,000 hectares of crop fields have gone under water while fish of nearly 50 ponds of the area were washed way by the flood water, according to the local Department of Agricultural Extension office.
In Beanibazar upazila, floodwater entered the houses after the embankment of Kushiyara river in Kakordiya village collapsed. Many of the crop fields have already gone under floodwater.
