12 Years of SUSC Celebrated

A two-day 12-year completion festival of Shahjalal University Speakers’ Club (SUSC) was recently held at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) in Sylhet.

The organisation started its journey on December 1, 2005 with the slogan ‘Come Here, Speak Better’. It is the only language-based club at SUST.

About the activities of the club, Mahir Mahmud Khan, SUSC general secretary, said: “It is the only organisation on SUST campus that works to help the students to improve their proficiency in English. For that, we organise two weekly sessions, named ‘speakers hour’ and ‘knowledge adda’. And I take pride in saying we have been doing this since the inception of our club in 2005.”

“To celebrate our 12th Anniversary, we arranged a couple of programmes. The most enticing was a contest on extempore speech in English. Given the role English and public speaking play in the world today, we believe the contest helped the contestants to get one step closer to their goals,” Khan added.

A colourful procession was brought out on campus and a cultural event was held. Music band Bay of Bengal, along with two stand-up comedians, Saidur Rahman and Farjana Shagir from Mirakkel, performed on the stage.

Chief adviser of SUSC Mohammad Faruk Uddin, Proctor Zahir Uddin Ahmed, Assistant Professor ATM Shahidul Haque Majumder, SUSC president Mohiuddin Robel and former and present members of the club participated in the programme.

“Speakers’ Club is playing the role of creating skilled human resources. The club will work as a facilitator for students who want to go abroad for higher education,” Faruk Uddin said.

“2017 has been an amazing year for us. Along with some great programmes, we celebrated the 12th anniversary of our club. We believe the work we did in the past year will inspire us greatly to do more in the future,” Robel added.
