AIIB installs one million electricity meters in rural Bangladesh

According to the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB), the first AIIB-financed project—the Bangladesh Power Distribution System Upgrade and Expansion Project—has officially gone into operation. So far, one million electricity meters have been installed in the rural areas of the country.

BREB and Dhaka Electric Supply Company Limited are responsible for the implementation of the project. BREB officials said that the project will install 2.5 million electricity meters and 65,000 transformers while setting up 75,000 kilometres of transmission lines. This is done to expand and upgrade rural power service capacity.

In addition to this project, AIIB and the Asian Development Bank have jointly provided project loans to Bangladesh. The money will be used to increase the production efficiency of a gas field north of Dhaka and expand transmission infrastructure. The project will promote sustainable economic growth and reduce poverty in Bangladesh by addressing natural gas supply constraints and transport bottlenecks. (Xinhua )
