Observing that environmental pollution is a global problem, Environment Minister Anwar Hossain Manju yesterday said all the countries have the responsibility to take measures to check pollution, reports UNB. “We shouldn’t only blame the developed countries, but we all, including the developed, least developed and developing countries, have responsibility to take measures to check the pollution,” he told a meeting at Cirdap auditorium in the capital.
Turning to the prediction that this planet will get destroyed soon, the minister dismissed the notion saying, “You should remember that the people of this planet have survived for millions of years struggling with natural calamities.”
He said the government has given top priority to protection of the environment while the Prime Minister is leading an environment-related committee so that pollution can be stopped in the country. Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) chairman Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad who also spoke at the programme said Bangladesh should not make any commitment in the international forum that it will mitigate pollution. “We should only say that we will minimise pollution as per our capacity,” he added. Environment and Forests Dr Kamal Uddin Ahmed presided over the meeting.
