‘Mismanagement behind accidents at level crossings’

Green activists at a function yesterday alleged that mismanagement and ignorance of the authorities concerned are the key reasons behind the accidents occurring at different level crossings, reports UNB. They said although rail is a safe, environment-friendly and popular mass transport in the country, a quarter is trying to destroy the sector through creating a mess. Referring to the recent rail accident at Sitakunda in Chittagong, the environmental activists observed that lack of coordination among government bodies also contributes to such derailments. Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba), Nagarik Odhikar Sangrakkhan Forum and Work for Better Bangladesh (WBB) Trust jointly organised the human chain programme in front of the National Museum in the capital demanding the government take steps to avoid such accidents. Bopa chairman Abu Naser Khan said about 137 rail accidents took place in 2014 with 25 occurring at level crossings. He stressed deploying more skilled manpower at level crossing to avoid rail accidents across the country. WBB trust programme officer Mahruf Hossain, Poba coordinator Atiq Morshed and Modern Club president Abul Hasnat, among others, spoke on the occasion.
