Excess fees realised from JSC examinees in Tangail

Complaints have been made against realisation of excess fees from students for submitting forms for the Junior School Certificate (JSC) exams in 12 upazilas of the district this year. Schools authorities are realising exorbitantly higher rate of fees from students at different schools in Madhupur, Dhanbari, Gopalpur, Bhuapur, Mirzapur, Nagorpur upazilas, it has been alleged. Deputy Commissioner of Tangail has issued a letter through district secondary education officer to all headmasters and madrasah superintendents of non-government secondary schools and madrasahs not to collect excess fees from the students when they submit forms for JSC and JDC public exams.
Sources said Dhaka Education Board has fixed fees at Tk250 for a student seeking to sit for JSC examination his year. But, it has been alleged that the school authorities are realising double the amount or even more. This comes as a huge financial burden on guardians.
It is alleged that Tk1000 to Tk2000 have been realised against Tk250 at some schools. Most of the students submitted the forms on August 20 as it was the last date without fine. Few students submitted the forms on August 25 as it was the last date for submission with payment of Tk50 as fine.
Nazrul Islam Khan, a guardian of a JSC examinee at Sunamganj-Garobazar Public High School, said he had to pay Tk1200 to submit the JSC examination form for his daughter. He was told that the money realised from a student also covered charges for coaching and development and others.
Mirzapur Upazila Secondary Education Officer Zakir Hossain Molla said he got no complaint from any guardian. He also said if extra fees are realized, the headmaster will be punished.
