The government is disconnecting illegal gas connection in districts in a drive to cut down on misuse of the vital natural resources and stop revenue losses. Our correspondent reports from Sreepur says: About one kilometer of illegal gas lines at Nayanpur in of Sreepur upazila in Gazipur district have been disconnected on Wednesday. The Bhaluka office of the state-owned Titas gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited disconnected the lines in a crackdown on illegal consumers of gas. Officials of Titas Gas company said a group of dishonest men allegedly in connivance with some ruling party men managed to fix gas lines to their houses illegally from industrial gas transmission lines. Local ruling party men allegedly helped people obtain illegal gas connections in exchange for money. The illegal gas lines have been disrupting production in different factories in the area. On the other hand, the government is being deprived of huge income. This has prompted the Titas gas authorities to take the initiative to disconnect the illegal gas lines. Manager of Bhaluka regional office of Titas gas Moshiur Rahman said “We have started disconnecting the illegal gas lines after identifying them. The drive will continue and all such lines will be snapped.” Last year, 5,200 illegal domestic gas lines were disconnected in Kaliakoir and 2,200 in Sreepur upazila. Our correspondent from Noakhali adds: Illegal gas lines measuring about 33,000 feet in Sadar and Chhagalnaiya upazilas in Feni dsitrict were disconnected in a drive last week. Noakhali Deputy Collector (NDC) Md Jane Alam of Bakhrabad Gas System Limited, manager Md Abul Kashem, deputy manager Abu Sayed Sarkar and other high officials led the drive. Deputy General Manager (sales) in greater Noakhali Engineer Kharul Alam said they received several allegations of illegal gas connections. They have launched the drive in Feni Sadar and Chhagalnaiya upazilas and disconnected those lines. Locals alleged that they had each paid Tk 70,000 to Tk one lakh to contactors and employees of the company for taking the connections. Our correspondent from Narshingdi reports: The Titas gas authorities in Narsingdi region snapped a gas line connected to Star CNG filling station at Kararchar in Hibpur upazila on Dhaka- Sylhet high way on Wednesday for tempering gas metre. Titas gas office sources said Nooruddin Molla is the owner of Star CNG filling Station. He is also the vice president of Shibpur upazila AL. According to police and Titas Gas office sources, when AL come to power Noor Uddin started tempering of metre depriving the government of revenue. Acting on secret information the Titas gas Narsingdi regional office, led by Deputy General Manager Abdul Ahad, raided the filling station and after examining it found that metre box seal was open. Manager Tauhidul Islam said a case has been filed with Shibpur police station against the owner of Star CNG filling station for metre tempering. When contacted, Noor Uddin Molla, owner of Star CNG filling station, he said the gas connection has been snapped for non-payment of gas bill and that it has no connection with metre tempering.
