The government yesterday appointed Additional Inspector General Mohammad Javed Patwari as the Inspector General of Police (IGP). He will replace AKM Shahidul Haque. The home ministry has issued a gazette notification in this regard. The notification, signed by Md Ilias Hossain, deputy secretary (police) of the home ministry, says the appointment will come into effect from January 31. Mohammad Javed Patwari was an AIG (Grade-1) of the Special Branch of Bangladesh Police. He joined the police force in 1986 as an assistant superintendent of police after topping the police cadre of Bangladesh Civil Service exams held in 1984. Born in Chandpur, Patwary graduated in social science from Dhaka University. He has served the Special Branch for the past nine years. Patwari’s term as the IGP will remain valid until April 2020 and by dint of this appointment, he will steer the police during the country’s next general election due in the last quarter of this year.
