A private clinic was closed and sealed off in Matlab Uttar upazila yesterday for many irregularities including wrong treatment. Contacted, Chandpur civil surgeon Dr Shafiqul Islam yesterday told this correspondent that the private clinic, Maria General Hospital and  Diagnostic Centre, at Chhengarchar Bazar was being run wihout a valid license. "The clinic has neither any qualified doctor nor any qualified nurse. It cannot be run a private clinic as per the government rule," he added. Contacted, UNO Sharmin Akter confirmed the news.

Earlier, on Sunday, Tooghi Rani Sarker, 42, wife of Khitish Sarker,  from Kolakanda village had died allegedly for wrong treatment in the clinic. The clinic authorities dumped the body into a canal  beside the flood control embankment at Shatnol area. On Monday morning, pedestrians spotted the body and informed the police about it. The law enforcers later recovered the body.

The victim’s husband filed a case against nurse Afroza Akter Jhunu, night guard Jamal, and three employees of the clinic.

Following this, Afroza and Jamal were arrested on Monday. The others are now on the run. Anwarul Huque, officer-in-charge of the local police station, said that police are trying to nab the other accused in the case. The matter triggered resentment among locals, who staged a demonstration in front of the clinic on Tuesday.

The civil surgeon on Monday formed a three- member inquiry committee, led by upazila health and family planning officer Dr Shankar Kumar Saha, that submitted its report to the authorities on Wednesday. On the basis of that report, the clinic has been closed and sealed off.
