Teachers vow to continue protest

A group of pro-Awami League teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) has announced to continue their protest demanding removal of Vice Chancellor Aminul Haque Bhuyan for his alleged involvement in corruption and nepotism. The teachers made the announcement at a press conference at SUST Press Club at 1:30pm yesterday. They held the press conference under the banner of ‘Mohan Muktijuddrer Chetonai Udbuddho Shikkhak Parishad’.
Speakers at the press conference said the Ministry of Education in a letter said it will observe all activities of the VC in the next six months. The demonstrating teachers termed the ministry’s move a primary win of them as with this it has been proved that the VC is incapable and corrupt. They will continue their academic activities but will not provide any administrative support to the VC. But the teachers observed that some information provided by the ministry in the letter is not fully authentic. The letter contains some flaws, they noted. The teachers did not inform what kind of programme they will hold but announced to continue their movement until their demand is met. And a counter letter will also be sent to the education ministry, they said. Prof Syed Shamsul Alam, Prof  Syed Hasanuzzaman and Md Faruk Uddin spoke at the press conference. Prof Yesmeen Haque, Prof Anowarul Islam and Associate Prof Mazharul Hasan Mazumder were present, among others. Earlier, the teachers staged a sit-in programme in front of the Administrative Building on the campus that started at 11:00am and continued till 01:00pm.
On April 13 this year, a faction of pro-Awami League teachers under the banner of ‘Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Parishad’ started demonstration demanding removal of VC Prof Dr Aminul Haque Bhuiyan for his alleged involvement in corruption and nepotism and misconduct.
On April 20, 35 teachers resigned from 37 administrative posts and announced a list of agenda on this. On April 23, the VC called an emergency Syndicate meeting in the wake of the situation and went on a two- month leave. On June 22, the VC returned after passing the leave period but the teachers confined him to his office room and started a sit-in programme locking the main entrance that  continued till July 12. On July 23, agitated teachers postponed their sit-in programme after a meeting with the Education Minister at his office. But on July 29 the teachers brought out a procession and held a rally on the same demand. And at last the teachers denied to go back to work and announced to continue agitation for realising their demand. At last on August 24, the Ministry of Education sent a letter to the university authorities, containing 11-point instructions to stop the movement but the teachers announced to firmly continue their demonstration.
