20 shanties gutted in Gazipur
At least 20 shanties were gutted in a fire that broke out in a slum in Tongi railway station area of the Gazipur city early Tuesday. Fire service sources said that the fire broke out around 1:45am when some residents of the slum lit fire using straw to protect them from cold. On information, three units from Tongi fire station rushed in and doused the fire after one and a half hours og frantic efforts.
Two die of cold in Khulna
An elderly man and a woman died of cold-related afflictions in Kapilmuni union of Khulna on Monday night. The deceased were identified as Monika Rani Biswas, 102, and Krishno Chandra Biswas, 75. Parvej Alam, a union parishad member, confirmed their death.
BSTI fines 11 business outlets
Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution (BSTI) in a drive fined 11 business outlets Tk 133,000 in the capital on Monday. A BSTI team, led by its executive magistrate Nazma Siddika, fined those outlets as they were conducting businesses without taking BSTI’s approval.
The outlets are Mou Drinking Water, Meem Fresh Drinking Water, Everest Drinks and Dairy Products Ltd, Winner Fresh Drinking Water, Sensible Beverage Industries Ltd, Finkua Water Company, Arifa Agro (Pvt) Ltd, One OAK Food and Beverage, Dighi Pure Drinking Water, Al-Hera Enterprise and Noakhali Food and Beverage.
Discussion held in Rajshahi
Speakers at a discussion here stressed the need for boosting safe animal production to meet people's protein demand for building a healthy nation.
They said the unemployment problem in the region especially in its rural areas could also be reduced to a greater extent through making the animal resource farming popular in the grassroots level. Department of Livestock Services (DLS) organised the discussion on its Thana Livestock Office premises to mark the Animal Livestock Service Week- 2018 in the city yesterday. Former Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton and Superintendent of Police Muazzem Hossain Bhuiyan addressed the meeting as chief and special guests respectively with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Md Shalahuddin in the chair.
