Woman hacked dead in Comilla
A woman was hacked to death over land dispute in Mohichile village of Chandina in Comilla on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Shilpi Rani Das, 38, wife of Ranjit Das of the village.
M Ali Mahmud, officer-in charge of Chandina Police Station, said Shilpi locked an altercation with her brother-in law’s son Samir Das over a piece of land.
At one stage, Samir hacked Shilpi and her husband Ranjit with a lethal weapon at 8.30 am, leave them critically injured.
Later, they were rushed to Chandina Upazila Health Complex where Shilpi succumbed to her injuries.
Locals caught Samir and handed him over to police. A case filing was under process, added the OC.
2 bikers killed in road accident
Two motorcycle riders were killed as a pick up van hit their bike in Narsinhapur area on the Bypile-Abdullahpur road in Savar on Tuesday night.
The deceased are Rubel Gazi, a peon of Firoja Garments in Ashulia and Hasan Ali, a resident of Sonatala in Bogra.
Police said the accident occurred in the area when the pickup van hit the bike from opposite direction, leaving the duo bike riders critically injured.
The injured were sent to a local hospital where on duty doctor declared them dead.
Development fair begins today
The government will arrange ‘Development Fair’ at upazila and district levels across the country from January 11 to 13 next aiming to show the government’s multiple development initiatives and successes.
The main objective of the fair is to inform the country’s people about the development initiatives and the ongoing programmes the government has taken to build Bangladesh a middle-income country by 2021 and a developed one by 2041.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the fair through a video conference from Ganobhaban today, marking the Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
British Council’s Poush Mela Friday
The British Council is going to host a two-day Poush Mela (Winter Fair) on the British Council premises (Dhaka University campus office) from Friday, says a press release.
The fair will be open for all and there won’t be any tickets or entry fee.
Poush Mela will welcome the visitors with an impressive entrance decorated with the theme of village hut evoking the nostalgia of rural life of Bengal. To highlight the traditional skill of the artisans of Bengal, a small exhibition mostly with the women entrepreneurs, will be arranged.
These entrepreneurs will exhibit and sale pitha-puli, handicrafts, garment items, paintings, clay items, publication, decorative plants, miniature of the popular historical sites etc.
Poetry fest registration begins
The registration for the 32nd poetry festival titled ‘Jatiya Kabita Utshab’ begins in the TSC from Tuesday and will continue until January 31.
Jatiya Kabita Parishad will organise the two-day long poetry festival on the Dhaka University (DU) campus.
A press conference was held at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of DU on Tuesday to announce the date of the registration.
General Sectary of the Parishad read out the written speech while Kabita Parishad’s President Muhammad Samad presided over the programme.
‘Jatiya Kabita Utsab Honorary Award’ and ‘Jatiya Kabita Utsab Puraskar’ will be given at the two-day long festival.
The festival will feature poetry recitation session, open discussion and seminars. The festival was first arranged in 1989.
