NGO man jailed for cheating people

A district court sent an official of non-governmental organisation (NGO) to jail yesterday for cheating people. Kalapara Senior Judicial Magistrate Anisur Rahman rejected the bail prayer of Gita Nandi, 48, Kalapara branch manager of the NGO -- Swanirvar Bangladesh Health Care Limited, hails from Ramganj municipality in Noakhali district. Earlier, police produced her before the senior judicial magistrate court over cheating people in Kalapara. A case was earlier filed with Kalapara police station against branch manager of the NGO Gita Nandi, its GM Majibur Rahman, chairman Jasim Bhuiyan and two other persons.  Police quoting victims said Swanirvor Bangladesh Health Care Limited, Kalapara branch office, was opened in April this year.  Its manager, field staff and newly appointed supervisor were selling health cards to rural people in order to ensure their free treatment, the police said adding even its branch manager Gita Nandi took Tk4500 from 56 appointed female field supervisor as refundable security money. But the field staff and field supervisor of the NGO did not get their salary after working three to four months. Azizur Rahman, OC of Kalapara police station, said Gita and her associates collected crores of taka from people of the upazila. Police has started investigation into the NGO activities. Lokman Hakim, Kalapara upazila health and family planning officer, has expressed his ignorance about the NGO activities.   Sources said the NGO opened its branch at first in Latachapli area of the upazila, close to Kuakata heath resort.
