Worker killed, 8 injured as roof collapses in Gazipur

A worker was killed and eight others were injured after a portion of the roof of a building under construction collapsed at Faugan in Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Friday afternoon. The dead was identified as Fakir Alam, 27, son of Abul Kashem of Char Muhurihat in Dewangong upazila of Jamalpur district. The Gazipur district administration has formed a six-member committee to probe the incident.

Deputy assistant director (DAD) of Gazipur fire services and civil defence station, Mohammed Aktaruzzaman Liton, said the roof of the under-construction building of a resort at Faugan collapsed while some labourers were working at around 12.30pm on Friday. Some of the workers were trapped under the debris.

Three fire-fighting units from Joydebpur, Sreepur and Tongi fire stations rushed to the spot and started rescue operations, and found the body of Fakir Alam. They also rescued the injured workers and took them to Gazipur Shahid Taz Uddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital.

The residential medical officer of the hospital, Pronoy Bhuson Dash, said: “Rahim Badsha of Dinajpur district, Mahidul and Mintu of the same district and Iqbal Hossain of Jamalpur district were bought to the hospital. Later, Rahim Badsha and Mahidul were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.”

Mohammed Aktaruzzaman Liton, DAD of Gazipur fire service station, said: “It can’t be said now whether any more people are trapped under the debris.”

Deputy commissioner (DC) of Gazipur, Dr Dewan Mohammed Humayun Kabir, said the Gazipur district administration has formed a six-member committee, headed by additional district magistrate of Gazipur, Rahenul Islam, to probe the incident.
