Narcotics official jailed for taking bribe in Jessore

Jessore: A court here on Thursday sent an acting deputy director of Jessore District Narcotics Control Office to jail in a case filed for taking bribe from a liquor trader who has licence, reports UNB.

Assistant Director Mohammad Jahangir Alam of the coordinated district office of Anti-Corruption Commission Dhaka-1, filed the caseon Wednesdaywith Kotwali Model Police Station against acting deputy directorMohammad Nazmul Kabir.

According to the case statement,Sheikh Mohabbat Ali, a local liquor licence-holder under Jessore Drug Control Office, lodged a complain that Nazmul Kabir demanded Tk three lakh from him to renew his licence despite the drug trader had deposited the required government fees.

As his demand went unheeded, the Narcotics official lowered his bribe demand to Tk two lakh.

Based on Ali’s complaint, the Commission formed a special team to handle the case.

As planned, Mohabbat Ali went to the office of Nazmul Kabir aroud3:30 pmwith the money while the ACC team was waiting around the office.

The ACC team appeared at the spot when Mohabbat Ali was handing the money as bribe over to Nazmul and arrested the Narcotics official. He was then produced before the court which sent him to jail.

14 Bangladeshis return home  after serving  jail term in India

Fourteen Bangladeshi nationals, including five children, returned home through Benapole check-post on Thursday night after languishing in an Indian jail for one and a half years.

Tarikul Islam, officer-in-charge of Benapole Immigration police, said Petrapole Immigration police handed them over to their Bangladeshi counterparts around 9 pm.

The victims had entered India two years back without valid documents through a Jessore border point in search of jobs. Indian police arrested them from Kolkata, West Bengal.

Later, the arrestees were produced before a local court when the court sentenced them to one and a half years’ imprisonment The process to bring them back started following a joint intervention by the home ministries of the two countries.

Motiar Rahman, a sub-inspector at Benapole Port Police Station, said police handed the returnees over to their respective families.

Palak for properly educating next generation

NATORE: State Minister for ICT Division Zunaid Ahmed Palak yesterday urged teachers and mothers to help educate properly the next generation to bring about successes in the education sector, reports BSS.

"Next generation must be properly educated to help develop any area as well as the country. Teachers and mothers could play vital roles to educate the new generation," he said. He was speaking as the chief guest at a day-long ‘Chalan Beel Education Fair’ on Singra Court premises at Natore organised by upazila administration.

Singra upazila Mayor Zannatul Ferdous presided over the programme while Singra Gol-e-Afroze Government College principal Atikur Rahman, upazila executive officer Sandip Kumer Sarker spoke, among others.

Palak said the government led by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working tirelessly to develop the country by attaining the goal of educating students.

The government has been developing the education sector, specially the ICT-based education, he said.

A total of 1230 persons were awarded under 46 categories at the programme. Later, a cultural programme was organized.
