Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken a massive programme for cultivating wheat in five upazilas of the district during the current season. DAE office sources said a total of 20,000 hectares of land have been brought under the cultivation with the production target of 70,000 tonnes of wheat in the district.
Farmers of the district are now busy taking all out preparation for achieving the production target. Of the total land, farmers cultivated Prodip variety on 7,000 hectares of land, Bijoy variety on 4,000 hectares, Sotapdi variety on 2,500 hectares and Bari-1,2,3 variety on 6,500 hectares of land.
Deputy director of DAE M Shamsul Haque said wheat cultivation has increased this year than the previous year due to its low cultivation cost. He also said the farmers of the area were found interested in wheat farming on more new lands due to availability of seeds, fertilisers, insecticides and other agri-inputs in a favourable climatic condition. The DAE has supplied all necessary seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, and other agriculture inputs at a free of cost among the farmers to achieve the production target.
