Sweeper held with 7kg gold bars
Customs officials arrested an aircraft sweeper of Bangladesh Biman and recovered 60 gold bars weighing a combined 7 kilograms from Sylhet Osmani International Airport on Wednesday afternoon.
The arrestee is Karimul Islam, aircraft sweeper of Bangladesh Biman Airlines. Mashiur Rahman, Customs Super said that acting on a secret tip-off, a team of Customs Intelligence raided a flight Fly Dubai (FZ595) from Dubai around 4:50pm, and searched the passengers before recovering the gold bars from the sweeper, who was arrested.
Two army officers get PM’s donation for treatment
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday gave financial assistance for the treatment of two officers of Bangladesh Army.
“The Prime Minister donated Tk 50lakh for the treatment of Major Jadid from her Relief and Welfare Fund,” PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim told reporters.
He said Major Jadid’s wife Zakiatuzzohra received a cheque for the amount from the Prime Minister at her officeon Wednesday noon. Major Jadid was seriously injured in an IED (improvised explosive device) blast in Malion September 24 while discharging his duty as a UN peacekeeper. He is now undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore, the Press Secretary said.
The Prime Minister also handed over a cheque forTk 30lakh to Lieutenant Colonel Shaheen Ahmed who has been suffering from liver cirrhosis.
Schoolgirl killed in road accident
A schoolgirl was killed as a truck ran over her in Megdubi area in Gazipur city on Thursday morning.
The deceased girl was identified as Ayesa Akhter, 14, a student of class eight and daughter of Jasim Uddin, a resident of Khoraid area in the city. Sub inspector of Pubail police camp Rafikul Islam said the accident occurred when the speedy truck ran over Ayesa in the area at about 9.30am. She died on the spot. Police arrested the truck driver.
Photo exhibition on Rohingyas today
A day long photo exhibition themed on ‘Rohingya: the stateless refugees in Bangladesh’ will be held at the lobby of Bangladesh National Museum in Dhaka today.
The national museum is organising the exposition where photos captured by Bayazid Akter, a documentary photographer and photojournalist, will be displayed.
This is the Bayazid’s 7th photo exhibition organised by the museum on the issue. Prominent historian Professor Dr Syed Anwar Hossain will inaugurate the exhibition while Professor Robaet Ferdous of Mass Communication and Journalism department at Dhaka University will attend in the inaugural ceremony, among others.
