RANGPUR: A court here yesterday sentenced a woman to death for murdering her husband more than five years ago in the city, reports BSS. Judge of the Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 of Rangpur Md Rokanuzzaman handed down the verdict yesterday afternoon in absence of the convict. The court also acquitted another accused Humayun Kabir as the charges brought against him were not proved during hearing of the case.
The prosecution says convicted Sufia Begum, 45, wife of Ahsanul Haque Belal, 50, of GB Sen Road in Mahiganj area in the city made her husband unconscious feeding him with poison-mixed woodpile juice at night on April 4 in 2010.
Later, she brutally hacked her unconscious husband with sharp weapons to death at the same night. Local people caught Sufia Begum red-handed while she was attempting to bury the body under earth in a nearby jungle on the next day morning and handed her over to police.
Asadul Haque Bulbul, elder brother of deceased Belal, filed a murder case in this connection with Kotwali police on April 6 in 2010 accusing Sufia Begum and drug seller Humayun Kabir.
After investigation into the case, Kotwali police submitted chargesheet against the two accused persons to the court when the process of trial began. After examining the witnesses and evidences of the case, the court found Sufia Begum guilty beyond any doubt, delivered the verdict sentencing her to death and acquitted Humayun Kabir.
Additional Public Prosecutor Advocate Abdus Sattar appeared on behalf of the state while senior lawyer Advocate Sahed Kamal Ibne Khatib defended the accused side.
Expressing satisfaction over the verdict, plaintiff of the case Bulbul said Sufia Begum murdered her husband Ahsanul Haque Belal to grasp huge money and properties as he (Belal) returned from the Saudi Arabia after serving there for a long time.
