In a special drive, detectives arrested some 56 suspected muggers from different areas of the capital on Tuesday night, reports UNB. One Chinese axe, three machetes and two knives were also seized from their possession.

Briefing reporters at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Media Centre on Wednesday, Detective Branch Joint Commissioner Abdul Baten said the special drive was simultaneously conducted in different areas of the capital following media reports that the incidents of mugging increased in the capital.

Of them, six were arrested while taking preparing for committing crimes, he said. Mentioning that in most cases, mugging occurs while passengers are heading towards bus stands and railway stations, Baten said most of the members of snatching gangs are drug addicts.

The Detective Branch (DB) official also said the law enforcers' capability to identify criminals as well as arrest the perpetrators has been increased.

“Our efforts will bring relief for the city dwellers,” Detective Branch Joint Commissioner Abdul Baten said, adding that the drive will continue against snatchers.
