Defence argument continues in Zia orphanage graft case

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s counsel Advocate Abdur Rezzak Khan yesterday started continue closing arguments before the court in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable graft cases. The incomplete arguments will continue today and tomorrow.

After hearing the arguments for about four hours, Dhaka Special Judge's Court-5 comprising Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman adjourned the argument in favour of the Khaleda till today (Wednesday).

The Khaleda’s counsel will continue the arguments in her favour today as well.

In his argument, he informed the court that no documents of Sonali Bank had been shown before the court and no witness claimed that they found the original documents.

He further said no witnesses, who were designated officials of the then Prime Minister’s (Khaleda) Office claimed that any relief fund was opened in the name of Khaleda.

On December 21, the court fixed  December 26, 27 and 28 for the defence to place further arguments in the Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable graft cases against BNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.

The BNP chairperson appeared before the court premises on Alia Madrasha ground in old Dhaka at around 11:30am.

Senior BNP leaders, including secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar, Abdullah Al Noman, Abdul Awal MIntoo, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Amanullah Aman were present on the occasion. Of the lawyers, Khaldaker Mhabub Hossain, Supreme Court Bar Association president Joynul Abedin, secretary Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokan, Sanaullah Miah and Masud Ahmed Talukder were also present at the court during the arguments.

On behalf of Anti-Corruption Commisison Advocate Mosharraf Hossain Kajal, public prosecutor Abdullah Abu, Mir Abdus Salam and Amin Uddin Manik were present.
