2 ‘robbers’ killed in Comilla ‘gunfight’
Two suspected robbers were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Zafarganj union in Debidwar upazila early Saturday, reports UNB from Comilla.
The deceased were identified as Russel and Faruk.
Tipped off that a gang of bandits was preparing to commit robberies on Comilla- Syllhet highway, a team of detective branch of police conducted a drive in Hatimara area adjacent to Zafarganj Bazar around 4am, said Mohammad Shah Abid Hossain, superintendent of Comilla Police.
However, sensing the presence of the police team, the bandits swooped on them, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate that triggered the gunfight, leaving two dead on the spot. The DB team also arrested five suspected robbers The SP claimed that five of their members including a sub-inspector were also injured.
Netrokona clash leaves
youth dead
A young man was killed and at least 12 others were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over taking control of a water body at Joypur village of Mohanganj upazila on Friday evening, reports UNB from Netrokona.
The deceased was identified as Abdus Salam, 30, son of Sona Miah of the village.
Ansari Jinnat Ali, officer-in-charge of Mohanganj Police Station, said there was a dispute between local Awami League leader Ratan Miah and Pervez over taking control of Babli Beel. Following the dispute, a clash ensued between the two groups in the evening, leaving Salam dead on the spot and 12 others injured, the OC added.
Of the injured, Ratan, Kalam and Zahir were admitted to Netrokona Adhunik Sadar Hospital while the rest of them sent to Mohanganj Upazila Health Complex.
On information, police rushed to the spot and took the situation under control, the OC said.
Police, meanwhile, arrested Jewel Miah, son of Mafiz Uddin, and Almas, son of late of Amir Hossain of the village in this connection. The body was sent to Netrokona Adhunik Sadar Hospital for an autopsy, the OC added.
2 war vessels join Mongla Coast Guard to bolster security
Two war vessels - CGS Mansoor Ali and CGS Kamruzzaman - joined Mongla Coast Guard fleet on Friday afternoon, reports UNB from Bagerhat.
The Italy-made vessels reached the jetty of Mongla Port at 2:30 pm, said a press release. With the addition of two vessels, now the number of vessels at Mongla is seven.
The vessels, purchased from Italy, started journey for Bangladesh on November 17.
One shot dead in Jessore
A man was shot dead by some unidentified miscreants in Bejpara TB Clinic area in the district town yesterday, reports BSS from Jessore.
The deceased was identified as Tipu Sultan, 28, son of Mohammed Ali, a resident of the same area.
Sub inspector of Jessore Kotwali Model police station Mustafijur Rahman said some miscreants shot Tipu in the area at about 11 am and fled away riding two motorbikes when he was staying at his restaurant in the area.
Critically injured Tipu was sent to Jessore 250-bed hospital where on duty doctor declared him dead.
“We are trying to arrest the miscreants as soon as possible”, said additional superintendent of police Naimur Rahman.
1 killed in Habiganj road accident
A man was killed and five others were injured as a CNG-run auto rickshaw collided head-on with a truck in Sutang area of Sadar upazila yesterday, reports, BSS from Habiganj.
The deceased was identified as Aminul Islam, 30, son of Hossain Ali, a resident of Sarifabad village of the upazila.
Police said the accident occurred on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway when the two vehicles collided head-on, leaving six passengers of CNG auto rickshaw injured.
The injured were sent to Zila Sadar Hospital where Aminul succumbed to his injuries.
Man’s body found in Pabna
Police recovered the body of a man from a pond at BL Bari village in Faridpur upazila on Saturday, reports UNB from Pabna. The deceased was identified as Nazmul Islam, 49, son of late Abdul Kuddus of Gouripur upazila in Mymensingh district, who used to live at his in-laws house at Gokorethi village in Sirajganj district.
Faridpur police station office-in-charge Shariful Islam said being informed by local people police rushed to the spot and rescued the body from a pond of the village.
The body was sent to the Pabna General Hospital morgue for autopsy. Nazmul’s family members told police that Nazmul was mentally challenged.
‘Drug trader’ held with heroin in C’nawabganj
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive arrested an alleged drug trader along with 1.1kg heroin from Sujonpara area of Chapainawabganj Sadar upazila early Saturday, reports UNB from C’nawabganj.
The arrestee was identified as M Momin, 32, son of late Saidur Rahman, a resident of Pathalia village of the upazila.
Tipped off, a team of Rab-5 of Rajshahi led by camp commander Squadron leader Sayed Abdullah Al-Murad conducted the drive around 3:30am and arrested Momin along with the heroin worth Tk 1 crore, a mobile set and a SIM card, said a press release.
Youth found dead in Satkhira
Police recovered the floating body of young man from Icchamati River in Sadar upazila on Saturday morning, reports UNB from Satkhira.
The deceased was identified as Obaidul Islam, 21, son of Odud Gazi of Uttar Parulia village in Debhata upazila.
Locals spotted the body around 10am and informed police. Obaidul’s brother said that Obaidul remained missing since he left home on December 18 following an argument with his father.
