10 DU students to get Sitara Parvin award
A total of ten students of its mass communication and journalism department will receive an award after late Sitara Parvin, a senior former faculty of the department, today. "Top 10 students of Mass Communication and Journalism department of DU will receive the prizes for their outstanding academic performance in BSS (Bachelor of Social Sciences) examination in 2014," the university said in a statement. Vice Chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique will attend the function as chief guest and hand over the prizes while Chairman of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism Professor M Mofizur Rahman will preside over the function. Actor Ali Zaker will deliver ‘Professor Sitara Parvin Sharok’ speech.

Women Tech Fest held at UIU
The ‘Women Tech Fest’ was held at United International University on Thursday, says a press release. This programme was organised by UIU Career counseling Centre (CCC), Women Techmakers Bangladesh and GDG Dhaka (Google Developer Group Dhaka). This programme was organised to inspire and empower the women of Bangladesh mainly towards technical studies and usage of technology for entrepreneurial gains. The mission of this programme was to empowering women through technology. The entire guest shared their experience of their life and gave advice the women about how to win the barriers and achieve the goal in the technology sector.  M Rezwan Khan, vice-chancellor, United International University, presided over the ceremonies. The panel discussion session was generated by Farah Nazifa, lead, Women Techmakers Bangladesh, Hashmi Rafsanjani, Google Country Marketing Consultant for Bangladesh, Bickey Russell, Googler, Google Mountain View Campus, Samira Zuberi Himika, convener of BASIS Women Forum, Mustafizur Khan, founder and CEO, Startup Dhaka, Jeniffer Farrell, founder & CEO, Criticalink, Farhana Nazneen, director of IamSMEofBangladesh, Sayma Rahman, senior specialist, digital partnership at Grameenphone Ltd, Alyssa Ransbury, head of Business Development, Bikroy.com and Solaiman Shukhon, head of Business, Aamra Smart Solutions. Different public and private university students and faculty members also attend the programme.
Seminar on environmental waste held at IUB
A seminar on ‘environmental waste and processing with novel materials’ was held at the Department of Environmental Science under the School of Environmental Science and Management at Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) on IUB campus at Bashundhara in the capital on Sunday, says a press release. The keynote speaker of the seminar was Rabiul Awual, a senior scientist at Japan Atomic Energy Agency, Japan. Awual explained synthesis and characterization of different functionalized nanomaterials. He also discussed about the efficiency of those materials in removing varieties of environmental contaminants such as Cesium, Selenium, Cobalt etc. He talked about the different aspects of Fukushima Nuclear Disaster including possibilities of recovery of radioactive Cesium from the nuclear liquid waste. His seminar was particularly important for the participants to learn about future precautions as Bangladesh Government is on the way of implementing a nuclear power plant in Ruppur, Pabna. Md Abdul Khaleque, head, Department of Environmental Science, IUB, delivered the introductory remarks while Lutfor Rahman gave the vote of thanks.
