Ex-CU asst proctor on 2-day remand

A Chittagong court yesterday remanded former assistant proctor of Chittagong University (CU), Anwar Hossain Choudhury, to two days of police custody again in connection with the murder of Chhatra League leader Diaz Irfan Chowdhury.

Senior judicial magistrate of Chittagong, Shiblu Kumar Dey, passed the order. Jashim Uddin, ASP of CID and also the investigating officer of the case, said: “We had sought five days of remand for interrogation, but the court granted two days of remand. The court has also ordered to submit the report within December 24.”

Earlier on December 18, a Chittagong court had rejected Choudhury’s bail petition and sent him to jail. Choudhury had taken bail six weeks ago and it expired on December 17.

Following yesterday’s court order, Alamgir Tipu, former president of the CU BCL unit and one of the accused in the case, along with his supporters, demonstrated at the main gate of CU, demanding the immediate release of the former varsity official and withdrawal of the case.

Tipu is reportedly a loyalist of Chittagong mayor AJM Nasir Uddin. Around noon, the demonstrators locked the gate and disconnected the pipes of a shuttle train at the university railway station. According to the case history, Diaz, an assistant secretary of the BCL central committee, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his residence near Gate-2 of CU on the night of November 20, 2016.

A second autopsy on July 30 was conducted at the forensic medicine department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. It stated that Diaz was murdered. Afterwards, the court ordered the CID to conduct the probe.

On August 7, a Chittagong court issued an arrest warrants against 10 people. They included Choudhury, Tipu, Jamshedul Alam Chowdhury, former general secretary of the suspended BCL committee of CU, Md Mansur, senior vice-president of the committee, Abdul Malek, vice-president of the committee, Rashedul Alam Jisan, publicity secretary of the committee, and former BCL activists Mizanur Rahman, Abu Torab Porosh, Ariful Haque Apu and Md Arman. Ten more unidentified people were shown accused in the case filed by Diaz’s mother Jaheda Amin Chowdhury on November 24, 2016.

On November 27, Diaz’s mother went on a hunger strike on the CU campus wearing a funeral dress and carrying a banner to demand the arrest of her son’s killers. She had later lifted her hunger strike following assurances from Chittagong SP Nure Alam Mina and superintendents Rezaul Masud and Moshiuddoula Reza.
