Import-export activities between Bangladesh and India through the Benapole check post remain halted since Wednesday night as Customs officials protest against assault on some fellow officials allegedly by immigration police, reports UNB.
President of Customs Officers' Association Nazrul Islam Bangali said immigration police were allowing two Indian citizens to cross the check post without checking their luggage on Wednesday.
Tussle began between customs officers and immigration police as customs officials protested the incident, he said. He told our correspondent that two customs superintendents - Shuvashish Babu and Nazrul Islam, and three customs inspectors - Farhad Reza, Mamunul Haque and Iqbal Hossain - got injured.
Protesting the incident, Customs Officers' Association stopped the export-import activities between the two countries and delivery of all kinds of products thru the check post, he added.
Contacted, Omar Sharif, officer in-charge of Benapole immigration, told that ‘customs officials and the police locked horns over the demand for bribe from a passport holder by the customs officials’.
