5 DU students get scholarship

Five meritorious students of Dhaka University's Fisheries Department received scholarship on Sunday for their excellent academic result.

Nusrat Jahan Punom and Md Mostavee Inan Eshik received the 'Prof Mohammed Shafi Trust Fund Scholarship' while Md Al Zahid, Shawon and Sabrina Akter 'Amena Latif Trust Fund Scholarship'.

DU Vice-chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman distributed scholarships and certificates among the students as the chief guest at the VC's lounge of the university. Chairperson of the Department of Fisheries Prof Kaniz Fatema presided over the function while donor of a trust fund Prof Mohammed Shafi spoke on the occasion. Prof Akhtaruzzaman called upon the students to become best human beings equipped with moral values.

Concert for JUCSU election held at JU

SAVAR: A concert demanding election to Jahangirnagar University Central Student s' Union (JUCSU) was held at Selim Al Deen Muktamancha on the university campus on Sunday.

JU Cultural Alliance organised the event where mass signatures were also collected for the Jucsu election.

Musical bands -- 'Apollo' form Rajshahi University, 'Gankobi' from Dhaka University and 'Abantar' from JU -- performed at the programme. Prof ATM Atiqur Rahman, Prof Mirza Taslima Sultana, Associate Professor Farid Ahmed and leaders from different cultural and political organisations spoke on the occasion. A total of 500 students and teachers from different departments were present at the function.

JU goes on winter vacation from Dec 24

SAVAR: The Jahangirnagar University (JU) is going on a 12 day winter vacation from December 24.

JU Registrar Abu Bakr Siddique confirmed The Independent over phone call yesterday. All academic activities will remain suspended till January 4 while administrative activities will remain closed from January 1 to 4. But the dormitories will remain open during the vacation, the registrar added.

Earlier, the university authority announced the vacation from January 21 showing the cause of registered graduate election for senate that will be held on December 30. But, in face of students’ criticism, the university authority has reconsidered the decision.

RU ACCE dept to celebrate golden jubilee Dec 24

RAJSHAHI: The Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (ACCE) of Rajshahi University (RU) will celebrate it golden jubilee and alumni reunion on December 24. Prof Dilafroz Begum, chairman of ACCE dept and convener of the programme confirmed the matter to reporters yesterday.

Marking the day, they chalked out various two-day programmes including inauguration session, colorful rally, discussion meeting, cultural function and reminiscence.

RU vice chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan and Pro vice chancellor Prof Ananda Kumar Saha have consented to present a chief guest and special guest respectively while chairman of dept Prof Dilafroz Begum will be in the chair.

World Arabic Language Day observed at RU

The World Arabic Language Day was celebrated on Rajshahi University (RU) campus through different programmes yesterday.

Marking the day, teachers and students of Arabic department brought out a colorful rally from in front of the university Shahidullah Arts Building at 10am. The rally paraded the main streets of the campus and terminated on the premises of Shaeed Sukhronjon Somadder Teacher- Student Cultural Centre (SSSTSCC). Later, a seminar styled "The Use of Four Skills in the Teaching of Arabic” held at Conference Room of university.

Vice Chancellor of the university Prof M Abdus Sobhan addressed the function as the chief guest while dean of the Arts faculty Prof FMAH Taqui spoke as the special guest.
