The owners and workers of battery operated rickshaws staged a demonstration on city roads and cordoned off City Corporation office on Monday noon to press home their 4-point demand including legalisation of their vehicles. The demands included issuing licences for owners and drivers of battery-run rickshaws, providing registrations for their associations and stopping the harassment and detention of such vehicles. Later the agitators handed over memorandums to Barisal City Corporation (BCC) and deputy commissioner's office. The programme was organised by the owners and workers associations of battery operated rickshaw, locally known as metro-rickshaw.
The rally was addressed among others by Advocate A K Azad, central vice president Trade Union Centre, Arman Hossain Malek, Dr Monisha Chakrabarti, Azizul Alam Sayed, leaders of the associations.
The owners and workers of the battery operated rickshaws also visited Uttam Kumar Pal, deputy commissioner (north and traffic) Barisal Metropolitan Police and informed him about their demands.
