Universities pay tributes to martyred intellectuals
Different public and private universities observed Martyred Intellectuals Day on their campus yesterday with due respect and befitting manners.
Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) teachers, students, employees and different organisations paid homage to the martyrs by placing wreath at the graveyard on university campus in Mymensingh around 7am. BAU acting Vice-chancellor Prof Md Josimuddin Khan led the procession.
Later, a discussion on significance of the day was held at the university community centre. BAU VC Prof Md Josimuddin Khan was the chief guest with Students Affairs’ Advisor of BAU Prof Dr. SD Chawdhury was in the chair.
To mark the day, Jahangirnagar University (JU) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Farzana Islam placed wreath at the Mirpur Martyred Intellectual Memorial at 8.30 am. JU Treasurer Prof Sheikh Monjurul Huq, dean of different faculties, provosts of different dormitories, teachers were present there.
Rajshahi University (RU) observed the day with due respect and solemnity yesterday. The day's programme started with hoisting flag half-mast atop the university academic and administrative buildings at 7am. RU Vice Chancellor Prof M Abdus Sobhan along with other teachers placed wreaths at the university central Shaheed Minar and Martyred Intellectual Monument of RU around 7:15 am
Besides, a special prayer was also offered at university central mosque after the Zohr prayer for the departed soul of the martyred intellectuals.
Prof Sadeka Halim elected DU faculty dean
Prof Sadeka Halim of Dhaka University's Sociology Department has been elected new dean of its Social Sciences Faculty.
The election was held at the Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of the university on Wednesday. Earlier, the DU syndicate appointed her as acting dean of the faculty on September 28 for the next three months replacing acting dean Prof Abu Jafar Md Shafiul Alam Bhuiyan of the Television, Film and Photography Department.
Nat’l debate competition begins at JU today
SAVAR: The 7th National Debate Competition-2017 will begin on the Jahangirnagar University (JU) campus today.
With the slogan ‘Ushar Aloy Joyollash, Mukto Koro Pran Duar’, Jahangirnagar University Debate Organisation (JUDO) will organise the contest marking its 13th founding anniversary.
JUDO President Shahin Reza disclosed the event through a press conference held at Jahangirnagar University Journalists’ Association (JUJA) office yesterday at 3 pm.
A total of 32 teams from universities, colleges and schools around the country will participate in the programme, he said.
The 5-day programme will be included with a rally, inter university, college and school debate competition, 13th founding anniversary celebration, prizes giving ceremony and a concluding session. The debate competition will end on December 23.
IUTA gets new committee
KUSHTIA: Prof M Mizanur Rahman of Accounting and Information Systems Department and Prof Dr M Wali Ullah of Dawah and Islamic Studies Department have been elected as president and secretary respectively of Islamic University Teachers' Association (IUTA).
Prof M Kazi Akhtar Hossen announced the results as IUTA chief election commissioner at the university's Art's Faculty Building around 9:30 pm on Wednesday.
Professor Shaheed M Rezwan was elected as the vice-president of the 14-member executive committee while Professor Dr ASM Ainul Haque Akondo as joint-secretary and Professor Dr M Asad-Ullah as treasurer.
The other members of the committee are Professor M Abdu Sina, Professor M Tozammel Hossain, Professor AKM Matinur Rahman, Professor M Najibul Haque, Professor Obaydul Islam, Professor Nurun Nahar, AKM Rashiduzzaman, Mustafizur Rahman, Jahidul Islam and Najimuddin.
A total of 312 teachers out of 356 casted their votes while Professor M Mizanur Rahman bagged 168 votes and his rival Awami League-backd Shapla Forum and Bangabandhu Parisad panel Professor Ruhul KM Saleh got 114 votes.
