Over the last few years, a thin device that looks like a credit card has been used to cheat in the exams. It has a mobile SIM fitted to it. It has a small listening kit too. Through this device, the examinee could get all the answers from outside the hall. This year, DU handed over several students to the police for using this kind of device during the admission test.
On October 20, Dhaka University’s ‘D’ unit admission test was held. Earlier in the day, the media got the news of the English section question leak. In the initial investigation, CID said the question was leaked using the digital device.
On October 20, on the night of the admission test of the ‘D’ unit of DU, varsity students Mohiuddin Rana and Abdullah Al Mamun were arrested from Amar Ekushey Hall and Dr Muhammad Shahidullah Hall.
Later, on the basis of information received from Mohiuddin Rana and Abdullah Al Mamun from Nov 1 to 3, CID arrested Daffodil University student Ishraq Hossain Rafi, Farzad Sobhan Nafi and Anin Chowdhury, one of the main accused in the gang.
Earlier, in November, CID arrested Najid Anjum Tanay, a geography student of DU, believed to be the key person behind the DU admission question paper leak.
In court, Najid Anjum Tanay was named as the main culprit for the delivery of the digital devices and question leaks in the confessional statements of the two accused. He named several other members of the gang in his confession.
According to the confession, on November 1, a student of Daffodil University, Nafi, was arrested from Agargaon in Dhaka. Based on the information provided by Nafi, another activist of the gang, Anin, was arrested on November 3.
Tanay told the CID interrogators that in 2015 and 2016, they had helped admit students to several public universities, including DU and Jagannath University, by using a digital device and by leaking the question paper.
Based on information provided by Tanay, some others were also identified. Seven students were arrested. They were Tanvir Ahmed Mallik, Md Baijid, Nahid Iftekhar, Faraden Ahmed Sabbir, Prosenjit Das, Rifat Hossain, and Azizul Hakim. The arrested students were being interrogated, said Sharmin Jahan.
