Edward Paul Teddy Sheringham, known as Teddy Sheringham, the former English national footballer is now in the city when he came here yesterday morning to watch his son’s Charles Edward Williams Sheringham’s performance, who is playing for Saif Sporting Club in Dhaka Premier Football League.
Sheringham, in his 51 times national caps for England from 1993-2002, scored 11 goals while in his English Premier League career he is the tenth-highest goal-scorer in the history of the Premiership with 147 goals.
Sheringham, who played as a forward mostly as a second striker, in a 24-year professional career is currently head coach of Indian Super League team Athletico De Kolkata.
Sheringham, whom joined Manchester United in 2001 where he won three Premiership titles, one FA Cup, one UEFA Champions League, an Intercontinental Cup and an FA Charity Shield.
The pinnacle of his career came when he scored the equaliser and provided the assistance for Manchester United’s winning goal in the 1999 UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich.
Sheringham when came at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday to watch match of his son, talked to the reporters – “It is first time I am in Bangladesh, Yes, of course. He (my son) has been here for a few weeks. He said, come across with him when you can.”
Replying to a query whether he would be seen here again, “You never know. Charlie is here for the season and I like to watch him as much as I can. It worked out great for me to come this weekend. I'm not sure what I would do every weekend but I will try to come across to watch him.”
“No, I have seen Charlie's first goal but I've not seen the second goal yet. I think the first goal was a nice goal and hope the second goal was good as well.”
About the career of his son Charlie’s, “I am very proud of him the way he is conducting himself and what he has done in his career, might not be of his type. It was tough time. he's got through this. He has done well to get where he is. I'm very proud to see him come here in Bangladesh and try his luck out here. Because it is not easy to do here.”
