The 10th December in 1971, the freedom  fighters along with hundreds of common people hoisted the flag of independent Bangladesh for the first time in the town after defeating the Pakistani occupation forces, reports

To observe the day, district and Sadar upazila units of Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad have taken up a number of programmes including hoisting national and organisational flags in the morning at its unit offices, placing wreaths at Baddhyabhumi near judge court, mass graveyard in Water Development Board Office premises and the martyrs’ memorial, holding colorful rally and discussion meeting in the town.

District administration, Awami League, Socio-cultural organisations have also taken various programmes to mark the day.

On 23rd May during the Liberation War, the Pak army killed 39 people at Itna village of Lohagara upazila.   They conducted mass killing and plundering including violation of women in the upazila.  

On 8th December in 1971, the freedom fighters attack on Pakistani Army at Lohagora and they took control over the area. Kalia was freed on December 9.

On December 9 and 10, a group of freedom fighters led by Sharif Humayun Kabir and Fazlur Rahman Zinnah took position inside the Narail Water Development Board (WDB) and started firing targeting the Pakistani military forces where they set up a camp.

In retaliation, the Pakistani forces accompanied by local collaborators started firing back indiscriminately targeting the freedom fighters.

The freedom fighters attacked the Pak army from all sides and liberated Narail on the day.
