Favourites South Korea added three more gold medals as India won one in the 20th Asian Archery Championship at Bangabandhu National Stadium in the capital yesterday. Abhishek Verma brought the first gold for India and on his way to final he downed Abul Kashem Mamun, the last man among the Bangladesh archers to be eliminated from the individual compound event in the quarterfinal and a Korean contender in the final.
Abul Kashem Mamun, who did the best result in the individual event among host archers qualifying into the quarterfinal in the men’s compound event, in his reaction about the elimination from the quarterfinal phase said, “In fact in accordance with our standard, it is the best result. There was air also, I am happy to reach here” said Mamun.
Meanwhile, on the day four gold events were decided when Korea kept their clear dominance with winning three and so far they won five gold medals. Korean Lee Seungyun won the gold in the recurve men’s event with Kawata of Japan bagging the silver and Wang Depeng won the bronze.
In the recurve women’s event Lee Eun Gyeong of Korea defeated her compatriot Choi Menseon in the final, while another Korean Ki BoBae won the bronze.
Korea won the last gold medal on the day in the compound women event when Song Yun Soo defeated her compatriot Choi Bomin and Indian Jyoti Surekha won the bronze.
Lokesh Chand, coach of the Indian team, after his team’s winning only one gold on the day said that he was confident to win gold and some medals, “I am sure tomorrow we will win at least two gold medals in the both men and women compound,” said Lokesh Chand. However, Bangladesh archers, who left three events - men’s compound and recurve team events and the women’s compound team events, will compete with confidence.
Men’s compound event is comprised with Abul Kashem Mamun, Nazmul Huda and Milon Mollah and the recurve men’s team event is comprised with Ruman Shana, Tamimul Islam and Ahkim Ahmed Rubel while the women’s compound team is comprised with Shushmita Bonik, Rokshana Akhter and Bonna Akhter.
