Reckless driving from the opposite direction on one-way roads in Hatirjheel has become a menace. What was built as one-way roads along two sides of the lake providing short-cuts to Gulshan and Rampura or Badda areas of the city, avoiding the congested Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue or Moghbazar, have become dangerous for those using them at night or during rain when visibility is poor. It has become a routine for most people riding motorbikes, driving microbuses or cars to take the wrong side of the one-way even on the way to the Hotel Sonargaon roundabout or towards the FDC crossing to avoid traffic congestion. Some daredevils even skip the FDC rail gate by taking the wrong side of the road.
One such reckless driver was spotted on Monday afternoon wriggling out of the closed rail gate barrier ahead of the speeding train rushing down the tracks. However, there was no one to stop such bravado even at the FDC crossing where there is a post of city (north) traffic police with a sergeant and couple of traffic constables, aided sometimes by a vehicle wrecker parked beside it. The traffic police said it was not possible to stop all such vehicles.
But what about a bus or a truck taking the Hatirjheel road at 10.24pm on Monday to cross the bridge (which is forbidden) to go to the other side of the lake on the way to the FDC crossing, despite a traffic sergeant trying to negotiate the traffic chaos?
The officer made no attempt to discipline the traffic as he himself was flowing with the traffic, despite getting his motorcycle hit by an auto-rickshaw.
Muslehuddin Ahmed, a Joint Commissioner (traffic) for Dhaka north of the
DMP, told The Independent yesterday (Tuesday) that they were trying to discipline rowdies taking wrong sides
of the Hatirjheel and FDC gate.
“We’ve flying squads in the traffic department and they will take on those flouting traffic norms,” he said, adding that policemen at the FDC gate and on the road down Gulshan Niketan would take appropriate steps for those using the wrong side.
