A rickshaw puller was killed after a statue of a tiger collapsed on him at Karwan Bazar intersection in the capital early yesterday. The tiger mural was installed on the spot as part of a project to beautify the capital during the ICC World Cup in 2011. Four years later, the statue collapsed on the rickshaw puller, identified as Mohammad Ali (42). Imrul Shahed, Sub Inspector of Kalabagan Police Station, said Ali was sleeping covering himself with a polythene sheet, on his rickshaw parked right underneath the statue, on Friday night. “Due to heavy rains for the last couple of days, the base of the statute, which was already in a damaged shape, crumbled last night and it collapsed on Ali around 3:30am” Shahed said. He said that the heavy statue directly collapsed onto the head of Ali and injured him severely. Local people informed the Kalabagan Police Station about the incident and Ali was immediately taken into Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is the authority to look after the statue.
