Ex-UP member shot dead

Pabna: A former union parisad (UP) member was shot to death in Khanka Sharif Bazar area at Boro Durgapur village of Bera upazila on Friday night, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Sabuj Mandal, 45, a former member of Dhalarchar union parishad and son of late Lokman Mandal of the village.

Gautam Kumar Biswas, additional superintendent of Pabna district police, said some miscreants numbering four to five shot Sabuj to death while he was taking tea at a stall around 8:00 pm.

Police primarily suspect that Sabuj might have been killed over establishing supremacy in the area, he added.

Youth stabbed dead

Sylhet: Miscreants knifed a youth to death in broad day light at Dakkhinbazar of Beanibazar municipality area yesterday, reports UNB.

The deceased is identified as Anwar Hossain, 24, son of Siraj Uddin of Supatola village of Beanibazar municipality.

Witnesses said some miscreants attacked the victim with sharp weapons around 12 noon killing him on the spot. Locals and relatives of the victim demonstrated at the municipality area protesting the murder. Police arrested two people in this connection.

The body was sent to upazila health complex.

Schoolboy killed in road crash

Laxmipur: A schoolboy was killed as a CNG-run auto rickshaw hit him in Charmohona area in Raipur upazila yesterday morning, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Fahad Hossain, son of Alam Mijhir and a class III student of Abdul Alim Government Primary School.

A M M Azizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Raipur Police Station, said the auto-rickshaw knocked Fahad down while he was crossing the road, leaving him dead on the spot.

Police arrested driver Belal Hossain.

Udichi gen secretary held

Sherpur: Police arrested two people, including the general secretary of Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi Sherpur unit, in an extortion case on Friday night, reports UNB.

Udichi activist Ritesh Karmakar, 37, also teacher of Muktijodda Nizam Uddin Ahmed College, and Amit were arrested from Ritesh’s Nayani Bazar residence around 11:30pm, said Inspector Nazrul Islam, officer-in-charge of Sadar police station.

Ram Poddar, a businessman at Nayani Bazar, filed the case accusing 25 people, including Ritesh Karmakar, for demanding Tk 50-lakh extortion from him, the OC added.

Bangladesh Udichi Shilpigosthi Sherpur unit president Tapan Sarwar, Bangladesh Mahila Parishad Sherpur district unit president Joyosree Das Laxmi and local cultural activists expressed concern at the arrest of Ritesh Karmakar.

Stalker gets one year jail

Laxmipur: A mobile court on Friday night sentenced a man to one year imprisonment for harassing a schoolgirl in Char Martin area in Kamalnagar upazila.

The convict is Sumon, son of Yusuf of Char Martin area.

Victim’s family members said Sumon used to harass a class-VII student of Munshirhat High School.

Local people caught Sumon red handed when he was stalking the girl on her way home from tuition in the afternoon and handed him over to police.

Later, he was produced before a mobile court led by Azgar Ali, executive magistrate and also Ramgati upazila nirbahi officer (UNO), who awarded Sumon the jail term.

Youth kills self in Pabna

Pabna: A young man allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself at Chatiani of Pabna municipality on Friday afternoon, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Babu Khandaker, 20, son of Moni Khandaker.

Abdur Razzak, officer-in-charge of Pabna Police Station, said Babu opened fire on his chest himself and died on the spot.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Pabna General Hospital. Police also seized his pistol. Victim’s father filed an unnatural death case.

Babu was accused in two cases.

28 arrested in Habiganj

HABIGANJ: Police, in separate drives, arrested 28 people, including an alleged drug trader and 13 wanted accused, from different areas of the district yesterday, reports BSS.

Law enforcers also recovered 200 grams of hemp and some Yaba tablets during the drives.

Based on secret information, a team of Madhabpur police nabbed an alleged drug trader with 200 grams of hemp from Taliyapara area of the upazila, police

said.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Nazim Uddin said 27 men were picked up from different areas of the district on different charges.

Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added.

The arrested were sent to jail.

Farmer stabbed dead

Gopalganj: A farmer was stabbed to death by his rivals at Gobinodopur village in Muksudpur upazila on Thursday night, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Ilias Munshi, a resident of the village.

Md Azizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Muksudpur Police Station, said there had been a long standing dispute between Farid Munshi and Engineer Ali Azam over establishing supremacy in the village.

Six months ago, Ilias, a supporter of Farid Munshi, filed a case against the supporters of Ali Azam as they beat up Ilias.

Following previous enmity, the supporters of Farid stabbed Ilias mercilessly while he was returning from his uncle’s house at the same village around 9:30pm, leaving critically injured.
