12 doping gang men arrested

Detectives in separate drives arrested 12 alleged members of a dope gang, including its leader Hazi Abdur Gafur, from different parts of the capital yesterday, reports UNB. The other arrestees were Nurul, Sabuj, Bashar, Hasan, Akhter, Kalam, Sumon, Netaji, Ibrahim, Monir and Saidul. Briefing reporters after the arrest Joint Commissioner (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Monirul Islam said tipped off, a team of DB police launched a drive in the city’s Shahbagh area around 7:45 am and arrested the six members -- Nurul, Sabuj, Bashar, Hasan, Akhter and Kalam. The plainclothes team also conducted another drive in Malibagh rail gate area of the capital around 8:45pm and arrested six others-- Sumon, Netaji, Ibrahim, Monir, Saidul and leader Gafur. Monirul Islam said the gang members used to snatch huge money from people in the capital and its nearby districts everyday after feeding them drugs with food, Monirul Islam added. Among them, three confessed that they had collected hajj visas for doping pilgrims to take away their belongings during hajj in Saudi Arabia, sources at the DB headquarters said. Gang leader Gafur planned to earn Tk 1 crore by doping pilgrims during hajj, the sources added.
