A female student of Rajshahi University (RU) was kidnapped yesterday morning in front of a residential hall.

She was identified as Umma Sahi Tamanna Shova, a final year student of Bangla department and a resident of Taposhi Rabeya Hall and daughter of Amzad Hossain hailed from Mohadebpur upazila in Naogaon. Students of Rajshahi University staged demonstrating on the campus protesting the incident.

Several hundred female students staged a sit-in near the residence of vice-chancellor demanding recovery of their fellow student and increasing security of the female students. They also submitted memorandum in this regard. Witnesses said a group of unidentified men forced Shova to get into a microbus around 8am in front of the Taposhi Rabeya Hall.

Her roommates suspected that Sohel Rana, ex-husband of Shova, kidnapped her. Shova was married with Sohel Rana, son of Advocate Nazrul Islam of Patnitola village of Naogaon in last December. It is alleged that Sohel often tortured her for dowry. Following the issue, they divorced in September this year”, said Nasreen Akter, roommate of Shova.

Shova was walking to an exam hall when the gang came in a microbus and stopped in front of her barring her way around 8 am. After an altercation, they forcefully picked up Shova in the microbus and left.

Proctor Professor Dr Lutfor Rahman acknowledged the fact. He said, the university authorities have informed the police in this regard. Amzad Hossain, father of the victim, filed an abduction case against Sohel Rana with Motihar Police Station yesterday evening.
