Detectives arrested a young man along with 12 gold bars from the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport area in the capital on Tuesday evening, reports UNB.
The arrestee was known as Md Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury, 34.
Based on secret information, a special team of Detective Branch (DB, North) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Iqbal around 5:05pm and recovered the gold bullion, said DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Masudur Rahman.
During preliminary interrogation, Iqbal reportedly revealed that he had long been involved in smuggling gold into the country from abroad.
Earlier on November 13 Customs intelligence personnel seized 10 gold bars weighing 1.160 kilogram of 58 lakh from the underwear of a passenger at the same airport.
“We arrested a passenger Abdul Monayem of Chittagong and seized 10 gold bars weighing 1.160 kg from his underwear from the domestic Agamoni point of the airport around 11am,” said a customs intelligence official.
