EU top official due in Dhaka Nov 19

In the midst of unprecedented crisis regarding Rohingyas faced by Bangladesh, Federica Mogherini, high representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy/vice-president of the European Commission, will arrive in the capital on November 19 to join a number of other dignitaries from across the world, who will also visit the country during that period. Diplomatic sources are considering the visit of Mogherini, who is considered as the foreign minister of the powerful bloc of 28 European nations, as very important due to its influence across the globe. While in Bangladesh, she will hold talks with Bangladeshi leadership in regards to the protracted Rohingya issue that is making Bangladesh suffer in many ways, they said.

Foreign ministers of China, Germany and Sweden will arrive on November 18 while the foreign minister of Japan will reach Dhaka on November 19, said the sources.

The EU has long been vocal against the treatment of Rohingyas by the Myanmar authorities. The EU was the first entity to have imposed limited sanctions against Myanmar military. And, the European parliament has passed a resolution condemning the atrocities orchestrated by the Myanmar security forces and urging Naypyidaw to ensure safe and dignified returns of the Rohingyas who had to cross into Bangladesh.
