Noting that democracy and good governance are established in a country when its citizens become vocal, Sushasoner Jonno Nagorik (Sujon) Secretary Dr Badiul Alam Majumdar yesterday urged all to play a vocal and courageous role for realising their rights as well as for country's betterment, reports UNB. He came up with the call while addressing a discussion organised by Sujon, a civil society platform working on good governance and election, at the Jatiya Press Club in the city marking its 15th anniversary. About fair polls, he said it is possible to hold a free and neutral election if the Election Commission (EC) plays its due role.
The Sujon secretary also said the EC should quit or confess its failure if it cannot hold an acceptable election. About EC's comments that they will hold the election the 'same way the government formulates law', he said when EC utters such types of words, it can be assumed easily that they cannot understand their responsibilities and they ignore their liabilities.
He said the responsibility of EC is not to hold an election only but to a fair election following which the democratic system will go ahead. Badiul urged the EC to play a courageous role in the upcoming national election and publish the election-time cost. He also called for verifying candidates' information carefully. Sujon secretary said it contributed greatly towards making electoral roll with photographs, establishing a separate secretariat for EC and ensuring voters' rights to information about candidates and so on.
